Coin-spiracy 2003/04
UNI Coins in Action - Vancouver
Charles Dickens Elementary
Charles Dickens Elementary has adopted kindness as the overarching theme for their school, making kind acts an ongoing and integrated practice. From wishful penny walks to hosting a concert and programs such as Books for Breakfast and Mother Goose, this school is actively contributing to its community!
Books for Breakfast takes place every morning between 8:15 and 9:15 in the main hall of the school. Students and preschoolers share a story and some arts and crafts.
The Mother Goose drop-in program provides an opportunity for mothers with young children to engage in fun activities while getting to know each other.

In December 2003, Charles Dickens Elementary students hosted a concert. Instead of charging admission, attendees were asked to bring a donation for the Foodbank.
Gladstone Secondary
As a kind act to another, Gladstone students visited the retirees of Lakeview Centre, armed with basketfuls of colourful carnations and warm wishes for a Happy Mother's Day. Read the details here.
In addition to this wonderful and most appreciated act, the Coin-spiracy Committee also raised funds for street youth in Vancouver by collecting loonies from their student population. To generate awareness and donations, students set up a booth in the school hallway with a "wheel of awareness" and a wall of kindness. Each time a student donated a loonie, their name was written on a paper coin and posted on the wall of kindness.

The school involved all nine divisions in the Coin-spiracy, starting with Division 1. Upon completing the three kind acts, Division 1 called a school-wide assembly where they presented their kind acts successes in a most entertaining PowerPoint presentation and played video footage of City TV's coverage of their kind act to another.

The presentation was received with incredible enthusiasm and inspired the students to new heights of kindness. Students from Division 1 concluded the assembly by passing on the coin to Division 2 student representatives.
