Story Highlights 2003/04
THE COIN THAT TRAVELED THE LONGEST DISTANCE IN ANY ONE PASS: UNI # 076 |
Read their journal entry for the complete story. |
The Pass:
Southridge Elementary's coin traveled from Prince George, British Columbia to Maylands Peninsula School in Perth, Australia - a distance of 14, 806 kms (as the crow flies).
Not only did the coin travel to Australia but Southridge students and teachers actually walked to Australia as their "kind act to self"! They walked 800 kilometers to Vancouver, then traveled 4,356 to Honolulu and finally 16,034 to Perth, Australia.
|
We also wish to acknowledge Anne Fitzgerald in Edmonton, Alberta for coming very close in total distance with their coin pass to Adelaide, Australia - a distance of 14,167 kms.
THE COIN THAT HAD THE MOST PASSES: UNI # 071 |
Read more about this school's kindness Coin-spiracy. |
The Passes:
UNI # 071, belonging to St. Mary's Convent High School in Mumbai, India passed hands over 135 times! Acts ranged from changing personal attitudes and habits to becoming more aware of the needs of others and committing random acts of kindness. The students' kind actions not only touched lives in their own community but reached a further half million through a feature article in Readers Digest. What a powerful reminder that, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted" (Aesop). |
THE COIN THAT CREATED THE GREATEST POSITIVE SPLASH: UNI #088 |

|
Lemonweir School/Tomah Memorial Hospital, the first school in the States to join the Coin-spiracy, created kindness splashes throughout the campaign.
Students and staff:
- Kicked off the Coin-spiracy by having their UNI Coin delivered to their school by police and military escort.
- Inspired the Mayor to declare a World Kindness Week.
- Won first prize for their "Christmas Everywhere" float in the Holiday Parade. Their message: We can all do our part in making the world a kinder place.
- Made ongoing media headlines from the campaign's launch to its wrap up Earth Day celebration.
|
| In addition to making headlines in the media and community, Lemonweir's ongoing commitment to incorporating kindness into its school culture through pay-it-forward campaigns, kindness buttons, SKITTLES, weekly announcements and special "Light the World" ceremonies, also created waves. The result: Lemonweir significantly reduced behaviour/bullying incidents. |
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: |

|
Mount Slesse Middle School in Chilliwack, BC:
- Raised enough funds for the Room to Read Program to build 4 libraries in Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia and India. In the process they also raised their own school's reading interest, performance and global awareness.
- Through various fundraisers such as talent shows, door-to-door campaign and silent auctions, Mount Slesse raised funds for other worthy causes including the Ann Davis Transition Society, Youth Restorative Justice and Division Society, Chilliwack Society for Community Living.
- This school also "conspired" with their new coinholder, the Room to Read Program, and KindActs team members to deliver their coin to the Dalai Lama. The story is still unfolding...
- Don't take our word for it...Here are sample story submissions from Mount Slesse students:
Melissa Warren Harvir Toor Taryn Nelson Brianne Hicken and Alex Harrison

This school exemplifies that kindness is not restricted by circumstance and all kind acts have the potential to profoundly impact our world. We would also like to acknowledge Glenview for so wholeheartedly embracing the Coin-spiracy, taking the time to communicate with our Team on your progress and experience and sending in pictures, your story and a journal entry (without prompting). INNOVATIVE RECORDING OF THE COIN'S ADVENTURES: UNI # 128 & UNI # 067 |

 View their photo album. |
We had a tie in this category.
- Waverley School in Edmonton, Alberta recorded their coin's adventure on their school web site and included reports written by students, photos and a positively beautiful poster collection. View the unfolding Waverley Kindness Coin-spiracy on their school web site.
- Tillicum Elementary in Vancouver, BC provided a multifaceted documentation of the Coin-spiracy. From the school's motto (Take care of yourself, Take care of others, and Take care of this place), to the walls in the playground, decorated garbage cans, glass showcase displays, school song and entertaining, interactive multimedia presentation of the coin's adventure, Tillicum takes you on a kindness adventure the moment you step in the door.

Story Contest winners received a beautiful Coin-spiracy Treasure Book as well as a $100 cheque from KindActs to use on a kind act of their choice - be it beautifying their local environment, supporting an existing school/youth group initiative or donating to a charity.
